What a sweet and touching novel. Somewhat of “The Beauty and the Beast” style…or at least that’s the impression I had, because to be fair the hero here is not disfigured or “monstrous”, but undoubtedly he has, especially at the beginning, quite the brusque and misanthropic attitude.

In this novel there's a problem with Tansy, the heroine; the first impact wasn't very promising, at the beginning I wasn't really into her, she results a bit vain and shallow...but, with my immense delight, as the reading proceeded, my opinion easily and rapidly changed. She's a deeper character than what the reader might think initially.

I think the author should improve her novel starts: by what I've read so far, I have the impression that the stories beginning share a not particularly captivating factor, clearly isn't the same in every Long's romances. Truth be honest, when the plot increases, the opening dissatisfaction is forgotten, becoming much more interesting, more thrilling and surely more fascinating.

How the marquess was won is a good romance, Long's ironic style is quite interesting, she describes thoughts and embarrassing and tragicomic circumstances, creating really funny moments for the reader.

Phoebe Vale, beside her young age, is a teacher with and impressive culture and a remarkable inclination for foreign languages; grown up in a not particularly happy context, now she lives a lonely but gratifying life: she teaches in renowned school, she has a really good relationship with her pupils and she is going to fulfil her dream to go to Africa and work there. However Phoebe isn't quite the calm girl, she is exuberant, cheeky, smart and sharp, and when she meets the notorious “Lord Ice”, Julian Spenser, Marquess Dryden, she becomes involuntarily the subject of a wager between the above-mentioned lord and the Viscount Waterburn: the latter bets that Drydan can't get a kiss from the young teacher.

Secondo me l'autrice deve un po' perfezionare gli inizi dei suoi romanzi: ho l'impressione, almeno per ciò che ho letto finora, che le prime parti delle storie abbiano come fattore comune un aspetto poco accattivante, quasi riempitivo (dove più dove meno, chiaramente); a onor del vero c'è anche da dire che una volta che la storia decolla, l'insoddisfazione inziale viene offuscata, l'intreccio diventa più interessante, più scorrevole, più emozionante e certamente più affascinante.

How the marquess was won è un buon romanzo, quello che rimane impresso dello stile della Long è l'ironia che permea i suoi romanzi: diversa da quella della Quinn, composta e più subliminale, diversa da quella prorompente e comica della MacGregor o di quella sfrontata della Hunter; l'autrice della Pennyroyal Green descrive pensieri e situazioni imbarazzanti e tragicomiche che risultano dilettevoli e spiritose.



Phoebe Vale, nonostante la sua giovane età, è un'insegnate con una impressionante cultura e una ragguardevole predisposizione per le lingue straniere; cresciuta in un contesto non particolarmente facile, ora conduce una vita, seppur solitaria, comunque appagante: insegna in una rinomata scuola, ha un ottimo rapporto con le sue allieve e ha in progetto di coronare, in breve tempo, il suo sogno di trasferirsi in Africa e continuare lì il suo lavoro. Phoebe non si può tuttavia definire una ragazza tranquilla, di indole irrequieta ed impertinente, possiede un mente sveglia, pronta e una lingua tagliente e quando si trova nello stesso negozio con il famigerato "Lord Ice", Julian Spenser, Marchese Dryden, diviene involontariamente il soggetto di una scommessa fra il suddetto lord e il visconte Waterburn:

It's not bad, especially the second part and I liked the epilogue, however the first half of the story is not exactly amazing, not boring but neither captivating.

This is my second romance by Julie Anne Long, so I can't say things like “I expected more” etc.; what I can affirm for certain is that I truly enjoyed What I did for a duke, this one a bit less.

The characters are good but while I liked Jonathan from the beginning, it took a bit longer to appreciate Thomasina in the same way.

Jonathan Redmond is young, beautiful and willing to express his worth, especially in the eyes of a father who, on the contrary, is skeptical about his talent and he doesn't make a mystery out of that when his son comes to him with an original business proposition about a new process for colour printing. But Jonathan doesn't give up and decides to turn to the Duke of Greyfolk and it's because of that that he meets, in a louche circumstance, the well-known, charming and cherished Thomasina de Ballestros.

Non è male, specialmente nella seconda parte e mi è piaciuto l'epilogo, però la prima metà non è stata esattamente scoppiettante, non noiosa ma neanche affascinante.
Questo è il secondo romanzo che leggo di Julie Anne Long, quindi non mi sembra il caso di dire cose tipo "mi aspettavo meglio" ecc. ecc., quello che posso affermare è che What I did for a duke mi è piaciuto moltissimo, questo un po' meno.
I personaggi non sono male ma mentre Jonathan mi è piaciuto sin dall'inizio, Thomassina ci ha messo più tempo a catturare la mia simpatia, cosa che poi comunque ha fatto quando il suo personaggio si è rivelato in tutti i suoi aspetti.


Jonathan Redmond è giovane, bellissimo e con una gran voglia di esprimere il suo valore, soprattutto agli occhi di un padre che al contrario si dimostra molto scettico riguardo le sue capacità e non ne fa mistero quando il figlio gli propone di investire in un'idea innovativa sviluppata con un suo amico, che consiste nella stampa a colori; ma Jonathan non si dà per vinto e decide di rivolgersi al Duca di Greyfolk ed è proprio per questo che incontra in un contesto piuttosto losco, nonostante già la conoscesse, l'affascinante e ricercata Thomasina de Ballesteros.

It's a romance that I liked a lot because of its simplicity. The story events take place in a short period: during the stay at Everseas' estate, with balls, hunting, strolls and so on. It is linear, without dramatic or unlikely turn of events; the romantic story development between the two main characters is really exciting: I like the relationship in which is him the one who firstly realises to be in love or who hasn't any problems in admitted it, in other words I prefer when the men are the one to chase and the women to be chased, and that's probably because in these kind of romance often happens quite the opposite.

Alexander Moncrieffe, Duke of Falconbridge is an almost-forty-years-old dashing widow, engaged with the young and stunning Lady Abigail. But when he catches her in flagrante, in unmistakable behaviours with the charming and beautiful rake Ian Eversea, and after an icy, but also quite ironic, debate between the duke and the two lovers followed by not particularly masked threats, the engagement is broken.

E' un romanzo che nella sua semplicità mi è piaciuto molto. La storia si svolge in un arco di tempo relativamente ristretto, ovvero durante il soggiorno di pochi giorni a casa degli Eversea, con feste, balli, annessi e connessi. E' lineare e non vi sono colpi di scena improbabili; l'evoluzione della storia d'amore fra i due protagonisti è emozionante e molto bella: mi piacciono le relazioni in cui è lui che capisce per primo di essersi innamorato, che non ha problemi che gli rendono difficile lasciarsi andare, insomma non mi dispiace leggere di personaggi maschili che "inseguono" e personaggi femminili che "scappano", anche perché la maggior parte delle volte succede il contrario in questo genere di romanzi.



Alexander Moncrieffe, Duca di Falconbridge è un avvenente vedovo (quasi) quarantenne fidanzato con la giovane e bellissma Lady Abigail. Quando però la coglie sul fatto, in atteggiamenti inequivocabilmente compromettenti con l'affascinante, bellissimo dongiovanni Ian Eversae e dopo un gelido ma anche piuttosto divertente, scambio di opinioni fra il duca e i due amanti, accompagnato da non troppo velate minacce, il fidanzamento viene interotto.
